As the saying goes - Win the Morning, Win the Day.
I love hearing about the ways people prime themselves for the day and the science is in, that just a few activities into your morning routine can really set you up for a highly productive one ahead.
Our willpower decreases throughout the day so starting off on a clear path and not wavering can increase your motivation and therefore, maintain that darn willpower. ie; you’ll be less likely to tuck into that white chocolate macadamia butterscotch cookie at 2pm, get through those emails and make it to the gym after work. Ya feel me?
So on that note, here's mine:
Hello H20!
As soon as I wake up, I drink a tall glass of water. Not only does it help flush out yesterday’s toxins, alkalises your body and kick starts the metabolism but it can be as effective as a morning coffee. Start with one glass, eventually working your way up, aiming for a total of 400-500 ml.
Want a little extra detox? Squeeze half a lemon in your water – this will speed things up nicely and encourage your body to process the nutrients from your food. I do not travel without my lemon squeezer. It goes everywhere with me!
Get upside down
It’s official. Inversions are the new Downward Dogs. Hanging around upside down for just two minutes each morning can have a tremendous effect on your mood. It’s considered a great form of stress therapy – relieving up to 35% of muscle tension within the first ten seconds!
Plus it’s also a free facial, circulating fresh nutrients and oxygen to the face giving your skin a healthy glow! You can read more about my obsession for inversions but the sooner you give it a go – the better!
Get your groove on
Listen to music or a podcast whilst you’re getting ready. Music is a natural mood enhancer so starting the day with a few tunes will certainly put a smile on your dial. Concentration is also at its peak in the AM so you’re more likely to take in what’s being discussed on the morning poddy.
Say thanks
Expressing gratitude is considered one of the most effective happiness techniques. Acknowledging all of the positive things your life is a perfect way to start the day. Take a few minutes to appreciate the present moment and you’ll undoubtedly feel happier, more productive and have lasting energy throughout the day. Journaling is a great way to do that.
Soothe the mind with meditation
It’s no secret the impact just ten minutes of meditation every day can have on your mind and body. I won’t reel off the countless benefits but if you’re really not in the loop - take a look here.
If you’re struggling to get in the zone, meditation apps can really help. Headspace is a personal fave – the narrator has a lovely soothing tone.
So there you have it. What a crazy way to start the day. Go nuts.
What does your morning routine look like?
